What is Ozone and why is Ozone better to use than even chlorine?

What is ozone?

Ozone is O3 (Trioxygen). It is nothing more than normal oxygen (O2) with an extra oxygen atom attached to it.

Ozone is environmentally friendly and clean. Oxygen is its only byproduct.

Ozone is twice as destructive to bacteria and acts 3000 times faster than Chlorine.

Ozone is the most powerful known broad-spectrum microbiological control agent with no toxic after-effects.

Ozone produces free radicals that attack carbon-chain molecules making up the membranes of cell walls. It breaks them down in a process known as cell lysis. The cell’s cytoplasm is released, and it causes the cell to burst from the inside out. Thus, the bacteria can never develop an immunity to ozone.

Ozone is generated from the air we breathe, so there is no need to purchase, transport, store or handle any costly or hazardous materials.

When used as directed, Ozone Generators have repeatedly shown they can safely and completely kill odors, mold, mildew, bacteria and viruses – even resistant ones like MRSA, and Ebola.

How does ozone kill odors?

What follows is a very simplified explanation of how ozone reacts with odors, molds, bacteria, etc. For a more scientific explanation, visit the Wikipedia page on Ozone. Imagine two oxygen atoms out patrolling the fence line of a teeny-weeny cattle ranch on the point of a needle somewhere in Wyoming. They have paired together and bonded to form a molecule of pure Oxygen (O2).

One day, the two saw a lone oxygen atom wandering around looking for someone to bond with (oxygen atoms like being bonded). They became O3 (a molecule of Ozone). The next day the three oxygen atoms saw something attempting to crash through the fence line. Look! It’s Ebola!, one atom yelled, and he bravely charged off.

As he got closer to the killer he pulled out his Big Gun and fired off an oxidation burst. Ebola groaned when hit and looked down at all the tiny holes that punctured it. And, when it couldn’t hold itself together any longer, it crumbled into a pile of rusty-looking dust.

Dead, and no longer a danger.

The remaining two atoms (once again a molecule of clean, sweet-smelling oxygen) rode away quietly – remembering how much their friend had sacrificed to rid the world of another bad guy.

Benefits of Cleaning with Ozone

Ozone (O3) is a colorless gas with a distinct, pungent odor. It is a molecule made up of 3 atoms of oxygen.

Interestingly ozone occurs quite readily in nature, most often as a result of lightning strikes that occur during thunderstorms.

In fact that “fresh, clean, spring rain” smell that we notice after a storm most often results from natures creation of ozone. Ozone generators create ozone in your home or business ensuring the same clean air as found in nature.

Ozone is one of the most powerful disinfectants in the world, second only to Fluorine. It is three thousand times more potent than chlorine in destroying germs, bacteria, and viruses.

It doesn’t have as strong, or over–powering odor like Fluorine or Chlorine, yet it is so powerful, it actually kills those odors.

Once generated by ozone generators, ozone is quite unstable, one of the three oxygen atoms eagerly splits off the molecule and attaches itself to any particle or pollutant with which it comes in contact.

That single oxygen atom from the ozone generator proceeds to “oxidize” that particle.

As a result, the particle will no longer be toxic, and will no longer be able to reproduce, if it is biological.

In other words, the toxic particle becomes completely harmless once ozone does its’ job.

When the single oxygen (O1) molecule oxidizes the particle, it too is destroyed.

Ozone cleaning leaves behind the O2, from which it split away. Just pure, clean oxygen

Genesis Automotive and RV Repair Ozone Purification System

How It Works:

Genesis Automotive and RV Repairs Ozone Purifier creates ozone (O3) in a special process that utilizes an electrical current to convert normal oxygen into O. O3 sanitizes by breaking down odors, microorganisms and other pollutants at their source. Any unused ozone converts back to normal oxygen in about an hour. Nature creates O3 as a natural air cleaner in several ways. For example, if you’ve ever taken a walk after a thunderstorm and experienced the clean, fresh smell in the air…that’s O3 at work.

Some Important Considerations

With Genesis Automotive and RVs Odor Ozone Generators, you can say good-bye to strong fragrances and deodorizers that simply cover up odors. Genesis uses the power of ozone to get rid of odors fast and easy without chemicals. Simply close off the area to be treated and let Genesis Ozone Purifier do its work. After a proper cleaning of hard surfaces and carpets as required Genesis process attacks odors at their source and leaves your space smelling fresh and clean.

For best results the ozone generator should be set up at least 4 feet from floor. For treating larger areas, an oscillating fan is helpful to circulate the ozone throughout the room.

If possible, allow a small amount of fresh air into unoccupied area to be treated to maximize performance. For example, when treating a bedroom, crack a window open about 2 inches.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires ozone output of indoor medical devices to be no more than 0.05 ppm (parts per million).

The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recommends an upper limit of 0.10 ppm, not to be exceeded at any time.

EPA’s National Ambient Air Quality Standard for ozone is a maximum 8-hour average outdoor concentration of 0.08 ppm.

If an ozone generator is running while people are present, the EPA recommends the proper settings should be selected so that the ozone level is less than 0.08 ppm.

For example, an ozone generator operating for 15 minutes every hour with the ozone output set on low, will effectively treat a small room approximately 12′ by 12′ without exceeding the recommended ozone level. A simple test is to let your nose be your guide. Residual ozone becomes apparent to sensitive humans in the range of .01 – .03 ppm. or well below the permissible levels for continuous exposure according to FDA, EPA and NIOSH guidelines. If the room is larger, these run times, or settings, can be increased accordingly.

CAUTION: Ozone Generators are for use in unoccupied spaces only. Excess ozone concentrations can cause mucous membrane and respiratory irritation. Ozone generators are for commercial purposes and not intended for use by persons (including children) with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities, or persons with lack of experience and knowledge. Children should never set up or operate an ozone generator.

Coronavirus, COVID-19 and Ozone Treatment

Coronavirus

Amid the impacts of the corona virus and COVID-19, we want to take this opportunity to inform about ozone, its disinfectant properties and how it can be used to help in this cause.

Some viruses are airborne, and most viruses tend to stick to surfaces such door handles or even utensils. Most viruses can be killed, or de-activated, by disinfectants and ozone happen to be the strongest disinfectant there is.

Disinfection of air as well as hard-to-reach surfaces by ozone is pretty straightforward and smooth. Ozone, already gaseous at ambient conditions, will simply mix with the ambient air, or can be injected into the supply air stream and from there easily distributed to wherever needed.

The level of disinfection is totally dependent on the applied CT value which is the concentration of ozone multiplied by the exposure time. The disinfection efficiency depends further on the type of virus that is treated, but a 90% reduction can be expected at 0.6 ppm ozone concentration during an exposure time of 20 to 120 minutes, depending on the air volume and make-up of the room.

Increasing the ozone concentration considerably reduces consequently the required exposure time as well as increasing the deactivation/mortality-rate of the virus.

The 8-hour limit value for ozone exposure for humans in a working place is generally to 0.1 ppm and is regulated by the local authorities. Therefore, no entry to the treatment area shall be allowed during a disinfection cycle. Afterwards, one must also ensure that all excess ozone is ventilated out/away before reentering to the room.
